| Shoshana Cooper's paintings in the BWAC Fall Show 9/13-10/26 |
[11 Sep 2008|04:59pm] |
My wife Shoshana Cooper will have two paintings exhibited in the BWAC Fall Show and an additional painting in the charity auction. Her two paintings are previewed on-line in this earlier LJ post.
Of course digital reproductions do not do justice to Shoshana's paintings which will be exhibited on one of the smaller hanging panels on the south wall of the second upstairs room.
The exhibit is across the street from the Fairway supermarket in the same Red Hook, Brooklyn pier as before. 9/13-10/26 weekends only, 1-6 pm. For more info see BWAC's website.

| Baby's First Ballgame Sept 3rd At KeySpan Park |
[16 Aug 2007|10:41am] |
|
Baby’s First Ballgame, this September 3rd at 1 PM, brings back baseball’s first couple Dave and Carrie as they celebrate their one year anniversary with the Brooklyn Cyclones at KeySpan Park in Coney Island. Dave and Carrie were married on the field after a game last July. A year later, they’re celebrating the birth of their baby girl Kate with the Cyclones and inviting all NYC families with a baby or pregnant mom to join them. We’re also raising money for Autism Cares at this event- with an auction and some great raffle prizes. There will be lots of contests, giveaways, and prizes for babies and their families. All pregnant moms in attendance will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch, and all families with a child under 3 will be allowed to run the bases on the field after the game! For more info or if you have a business or organization interested in coming, you can email dave@thekbuzz.com

| Bird Sitter? |
[20 Jun 2007|08:04pm] |
I'm looking for a pet-sitter who's comfortable enough with birds to let my guy out to stretch his wings and fly a bit over a long weekend. Any recommendations? I've talked to one person who's happy to do that, but unfortunately, she's out of town the weekend I need someone, and everyone else I've spoken with thus far just does food/water freshening and paper changes, no bird exercise/play time. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

A good friend of mine is co-chair of the planning committee to bring the America Cancer Society's Relay for Life to the Park Slope/Heights area of Brooklyn.
The relay will be this June, but the time to start raising funds for it is now. I'm going to be captaining one of the teams at the relay event, and we're really excited about the idea of maybe doing a fund raising benefit at a bar in the Park Slope area within the next month or so, in order to help spread knowledge of the event, raise funds, and hopefully get more people involved.
Does anyone know of any bars/venues in that area who may be interested in hosting/sponsoring the event? Or know of any who have previously sponsored similar events? We'd be open to having it outside of that area, but since the relay will be in Park Slope, it felt most appropriate to do the events leading up to it there as well.
Thanks so much for any advice!

| Novel Finds |
[19 Jan 2007|09:15pm] |
I've been keeping tabs on what commuters are reading on the subway for about a month now. So it's understandable that I'd be curious about some of the more interesting or colorful titles that I see on the A Train. Today, three of the books that I spied merited a few minutes of research on Amazon. Here are the featured titles:
1. A Therapist’s Guide to EMDR: Tools and Techniques for Successful Treatment- Laurel Parnell, Ph.D*
EMDR? Newly christened in the corporate world, I've come to learn that anagrams play a huge role in communicating many big ideas in a limited amount of space and time. Sometimes I receive emails what are so heavily peppered with them, I feel like I'm a member of the French resistance who's trying to crack the secret code for the rendez-vous at dawn. Anyhoo, here's the skinny on EMDR:
"The theory behind EMDR is that stimulated rapid eye movement may help in the psychological processing of trauma. It is thought that the day's events and our reactions to them are processed during REM sleep . In a controlled EMDR session, moving light is used to induce rapid eye movement."
The good people at healthyplace.com clarify it even further:
http://www.healthyplace.com/communities/depression/treatment/emdr/index.asp
For those of you who prefer escapism to therapy (you know who you are and I unfortunately know quite a few of you), a good, trashy romance might be just the dose of denial needed while winding your way underground toward Columbus Circle.
2. Pleasure for Pleasure- Elosia James*
It’s as good as it sounds. "Pleasure for Pleasure" is A Victorian Romance novel whose female protagonist is nicknamed the “Scottish Sausage.” (Insert Freudian quip here.) And who ever said, "don't judge a book by its cover" was wrong:

I guess Fabio retired?
Ah, love.
And finally,
3.) The Amber Spy Glass: His Dark Materials, Book III- Philip Pullman*
Never mind the cover, I always believed one can tell a great deal about a story from its first line:
“In a valley shaded with rhododendrons, close to the snow line, where a stream milky with meltwater splashed and where doves and linnets flew among the immense pines, lay a cave, half-hidden by the crag above and the stiff heavy leaves that clustered below.”
I swear one of my former creative writing students must be ghost writing.
Here's the rest:
Broken Prey (Lucas Davenport Mysteries)- John Sandford* Futureland- Walter Mosely*

[22 Nov 2006|01:47pm] |

Thanks!

[12 Nov 2006|01:07pm] |
I recently made a YELP talk thread about this, but I figured maybe I should post here to get more ideas...
I'm planning a bday party for next month, and I'm looking for a bar or lounge somewhat downtown (village/lower east side/soho/tribeca) or Brooklyn (Park Slope/Prospect Heights) area that is affordable (erring on the side of cheap or dive!) but yet has...here's the kicker...lychee
I'm obsessed with lychee, and I want to go somewhere that I can get it. I already love the martinis at Verlaines, but my crowd may number in the about 30 people range, which is too much to bring into a place like that, and while the lychee sake at Klong is yum, as well, same problem with the crowd size.
So...any ideas?
HELP!
thanks :)

| anyone need a roommate... |
[31 Jul 2006|11:02am] |
I know these posts are often pointless, but I figure I have to try everything?
Does anyone need a roommate or at least, someone to sublet their room for august? My August sublet fell through, and now, I have nowhere to live.
A bit about me: my name is Erin, I am in my mid twenties, and just moved to new york. I am in love with taking twilight walks around park slope, spending my evenings with books and a good bottle of wine, and taking advantage of all this great city has to offer. I'm clean and considerate roommate who likes to write letters and cook fancy food. Financially stable, though I am still looking for that 'first job after college.' I do temp work to hold me over while I apply to every publishing job out there. I'm having trouble finding the perfect apt, so this would allow me a bit more time . Park Slope is my ideal neighborhood. Paying the rent on time is never a problem and I have previous roommate references if required. I have an uptmost respect for peoples' belongings, and understand about sublets.
If you can help, or have any leads, please e-mail me at erinfae AT mtholyoke(dot) edu

Rejoice, Slopers! (or Slopians? Slopesters? what do you call yourselves?) The time has finally come for me to move to Brooklyn. Does anyone here have a broker that they can recommend (preferably based on personal experience or experience by 1 degree of separation)? I prefer North Slope and I have a bit o'green (but not a trust fund) in my wallet. Please, no self-promotion.

| Fat Cat seeks Republican Home |
[25 Jul 2006|03:06am] |
 Edan
Cinnamon colored and pork barrel-sized feline seeks new tax shelter to call his own. Rescued from the drudgery of the streets this cat has resided on the lap of veritable luxury for years but now is seeking different accommodations to further expand his first-hand knowledge of the human hoi polloi. This lump o' lovin enjoys dry food, hiding under the bed, occasional limelight and dodging blame whenever possible. Please comment if interested in giving this not-so-little kitten a home!
The facts: Republican home not required nor preferred, just sounded catchy. This cat is a rescue I tried to keep for some time, but the Doctor says either the cat goes or I do. Allergies + Asthma = Suck. He's is neutered with some shots and can be a real sweetie without being loud. Never a scratcher and not much of a snacker -- just an orange tabby with a Garfield genetic complex. Oh and he's a polydactyl so watching him pick things up can be a real laugh!

Do you have a podiatrist in the Park Slope/Windsor Terrace area you can recommend? I'm tired of shlepping into Manhattan.
